Hunters, dont forget to bring a target that you have shot recently with your bow or rifle. You will need this to hunt the first morning. Paper plates with a circle in the middle will work or whatever target you have around.

How many shots do we need, all 10? I had Kayla shoot 3 at 50 yards and 3 at 100 yards. Last night I read that they need to bring a target with 10 shots at 100. With Stephanie having the baby this week I don't know if I will have a chance to get Kayla to shoot 10 shots at 100 yards.

3 at 50, 3 at 100 should be good enough. I will call Kent to make sure. I dont see why they need 10 shots.

Just popping in to see what's going on. The former inlaws ranch in Clifton. Been from Austin to Clifton 100 times. Direction correction - from Waco on Hwy 6, you go through Valley Mills to Clifton, NOT through Meridian (which is north of Clifton.) In addition, you shave off about 20 minutes by taking 317 north out of Belton and you hit Hwy 6 in Valley Mills about 10 minutes south of Clifton. Glace at a map. It's a piece of cake. Good luck on the hunt, Gentlemen & Kiddos.

Thanks Trey for the correction. Re-looking at the directions I received it read: take hwy 6 towards Meridian. But good idea that everyone look at a map. The mileage from close towns are posted. Bow hunters/parents....Bring stools/chairs or whatever you plan to sit on in the ice blinds. Bow hunters/Parents...Consider bringing a couple bags corn for chum. Bring all personals..soap, towels etc. The weather forecast sounds excellent for hunting & outside activities.

There are beds. The Goodsons, Danns, & Cranmers will have a bedroom. Bring your sleeping bags & pillows. The kids, unless they sleep with parents, will sleep in their bags on the couch or floor. The floors are fully carpeted, but may be cold so a cot may be in order. Remember food will be furnished but special wants you have to furnish. Don't forget the cameras, binoks, folders with filled out documents, hunting license, towels, qualification targets, Hunter Ed Certs, fishing rods, hunting items, and medications. There are no stores close by.

I will start out the "story Telling".... Shirley, Jacob & I arrived at the Duncan 6D Ranch Headquarters entrance at 1:00 PM Friday afternoon. We had marked the hwy turn-offs with survey tape & balloons. Made a trip thru the blind set-up, trimmed some shooting lanes for the bow hunters, corned the areas again using an HCR bumper feeder & returned to the ranch house. Shortly others started arriving, with the last being Donnie, Tammy & Brandon. Don't know who really has the honor of being last, but it was sevenish, I think. After everyone gets re-acquainted & unloaded, we have sandwiches, chips, soft drinks & fruit. We had the hunters to draw blind locations, briefed everyone of the hunting rules, reviewed the required TYHP paperwork & said our goodnights & departed to another ranch house. We unloaded our personals, talked some, & tried to sleep. Sat AM. I'm up at 4:55, out the door & at the hunting ranch headquarters at 5:30. Hand out to the hunters the donated tapes/decals from Double Bull, the Utility Tools from Double "G" Archery in Georgetown, the Scents & Scent Blocker from Archery Country in Austin, and the Midland Walkie-Talkies from Sportsman Country in Marble Falls. Pick up Dwight (grandpa to Kala) & Kala Goodson first as they are hunting the farthest from camp. Drop them off, head back to the house, pick up Doeboy & Donnie and Hogkiller & Dylan, take them to the ice blinds we purchased from Double Bull. Back to the house, picked up Brandon & Jacob, drop them off, corned the oats patch with corn & departed. All that and still dark. Back to the house, have coffee & wait for 9:30 AM, the set time to pick everyone up, unless someone had deer & requested we not, using the Midland walkie-talkies. Everyone picked up & were returned to the house but one set of hunters. Why? Can't tell, but we have blood!!! Everyone that returned was greeted by Tammy & Donnie (Swatswife & Swat) with a breakfast not found in a restaurant. Success stories you will have to wait for from the hunters & guides. After the AM hunt, off to the fishing lake seen from the hunting headquarters ranch house. Not much action. Off to another lake by the Ranch Headquarter house. Different story. Threw out some food for the catfish. When these big boys came up for the food, everyone on the dock became excited as there are some catfish going an easy 20-25 lbs in that lake. Again, success stories by the fishermen. Everyone also soaked up the warm sun & just enjoyed the moment. We had to cut the fishing short as Mr. Duncan invited everyone over to his other ranch to witness what goes on behind the scene in training rodeo stock. He had a mini rodeo set up, real west Texas cowboys & ranch hands. The kids & adults had some great conversation with the cowboys. There were many questions and these guys, during the busy workday (SAT) took time to get off their horse and talk with us. Then the action began. Cameras were clicking & rolling, but you may have to wait until the banquet to see. Time was short and at 2:10 PM, off to the Samples Ranch for the 2:30 arrival time for the exotic hunt. After Terry, Linda, & David briefed the hunters on the hunt, gave everyone a tour of their animal processing, taxidermist, and outfitters operation, Terry & friend loaded the kids & guides onto the "mules" and departed to the 300 acre exotic hunting ranch. The rest of us returned to the Duncan ranch to get things ready for the Sunday AM hunt. Re-corned some areas & trimmed out more shooting lanes. Before dark, Kent Brenneman & I returned to the Samples Ranch to greet the hunters on their return. Upon arriving we were delighted to see not only the Samples, but their good friends, the Duncans. Dan, Jenn & brother Brandon also wanted to greet the hunters. Almost dark, Terry & friend departed on the mules to retrieve the hunters/guides. Again, you have to wait for stories... Sat evening, we were treated to an awesome dinner that was prepared by Tammy & Donnie. BBQ brisket (Donated by BowHawg), brown beans, potato salad, cole slaw, & all the trimmings. For desert, we had a fresh apple cake baked by Shirley (Olelady). There was also a cheese cake, but Donnie kept that hidden. LOL. Campfire... Dan Duncan had a fire ring delivered for our use. As it was so dry & grazing grasses are so big, an open fire was not a smart idea. He had also cut & furnished firewood. We all gathered around & had a campfire discussion until it was time for the hunters to share their day of activity. It had been a very busy day, up at 5 AM, going all day, and the evening closure at about 10 PM. But folks, these kids had some stories! Sunday AM...All hunters switched hunting locations. Kent takes Brandon & Jacob to far off blind. I take HogKiller & Dylan out, return for Dwight & Kala. Corned the oats patch again, & Flinger takes Doeboy & Donnie. Then since we have some down time, and there is a little guy that was too young to hunt, & had wished each hunter "good luck" when he had the chance, it was his time for more outdoor adventure. Flinger's son, Hunter, Flinger & I depart for another part of the ranch to binok the deer. We corned a 400 yard road & set up for our "hunt". Couldn't shoot, but Hunter was treated to view several bucks & many does. He also seen a flock of 46 turkey, but here I go telling his story. Again, they will tell success stories. Blood again. Again we were treated to an awesome breakfast. Then preps were started to leave. But wait! Mr. Duncan has offered the afternoon for additional hunting for those that were not successful, and there was blood again!!!! But as Shirley, Jacob & I had to leave, I was not there so someone else will have to continue the story. I have been on some hunts, hunts with adults & hunts with youth, but this hunt was packed with excitement, all day, everyday. Shirley & I had a blast. Dan & Jenn Duncan...Thank you. You both are great folks and made it possible for four youth, family & friends, to have an awesome weekend & a Christmas holiday adventure. Thank you for sharing your ranch, the rodeo, the lakes, and your presence. People like you are what makes organizations like the Hill Country Bowhunters become successfull in meeting their goal to introduce the youth to the great outdoors. We sincerely thank you for allowing Shirley & I to share your home with our friends & family. We love you and wish you both a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. Love Ya; Roy & Shirley Terry, Linda & David Samples.... Thank you guys for introducing our youth & the hunting guides to an exotic animal adventure. As you know, most were not familiar with exotics, and now all participants know the animals by site, and some by the nicknames you gave them. They were so excited & still are of having the chance you gave them. Our sincere thanks. Your Friends; Roy & Shirley Wolff Thanks to all for making this one of the most memorable weekends we can remember sharing. Special thanks to: Donnie & Tammy Rodriguez for preparing all the meals. Leann Dann, Shirley & Gina Wolff for helping in the kitchen as needed. And thanks for doing the cleanup adding Tammy also. Kent Brenneman & Steve Wolff for being the hunt coordinators, Hunter Ed, Range Master. Thank you Dwight Goodson, Kenneth Dann, Jim Cranmer & Brandon Arrington for leading the youth in the right direction, making this a safe and rewarding hunt for the youth. And thank you, the youth for allowing us all to share your weekend. These youth, Kala Goodson, Donnie Libby, Dylan Dann, Jacob Kruger, and Hunter Wolff, you guys were the best. You were very respectful, well mannered, most appreciative youth I have had the pleasure to hunt with. Your parents & friends are proud of each of you. And thanks to all for your respect of the wildlife, ranches, and all your new friends & each other.

Donnie's story as told by Doeboy Ok to start with we arrive at the turnoff of 6, and I see a dark cloud in the sky. I think I hope that’s not where we need to hunt. As it turns out it was close, it was his neighbor. So we arrive at ranch, do a meet n greet, and unpack. I’ll tell you what that was the best camp I have been in. We draw stands and head off to bed. SAT A.M Oleman takes us to our stand, no feeder but lots of corn thrown down. I add to it and settle in. Donnie sees a lone deer across the creek at about 150 yards. I hope it comes our way, nope. Donnie spots another deer, it’s a buck, even though the youth are allowed to shoot any whitetail, it was decided that we would allow the smaller bucks to walk. It comes within 15 yards, no shot. I finally get to see it, it’s a good size but it looks like a 6pt. I told Donnie not to shoot until I could see his body. The buck decided that the bushes didn’t look right, and walked off. Now the sun is coming up and we can no longer see the pasture toward the road, but we can still see to the creek. I look up on the small hill and there is a big doe looking straight at the blind. Quiet time. She walks down the hill right into the sun, Donnie can see an outline of her but can’t see to shoot. She walks off, but there are two more on the hill. Same story. Oh well someone should be along to pick us up. Oleman shows up and says I won’t give it away that’s someone else’s story. SAT P.M We are on Samples ranch, Mr. Samples drops us off at our stand and there are two does under our stand. He yells at them Doreen, Chrissie get back to the house! Well we climb into our stands and I hear something. It’s the same two does; I got lots of pictures of them because they hung around for an hour. Donnie sees something white about 60 yards away. I watch and sure enough here comes about 40 Aoudad, and he is allowed to shoot one. Well where my stand was, they saw me and never came closer than 55 yards. But they did stay within the woods. Just before dark I heard something walking in the woods behind us and it was a possum. Well now our ride is here. SUN A.M We switched stands with Dylan. We told him our problem and he told us about his problems. We are sitting there and I decided that I hadn’t PMSed my eyelids for this hunt, so while I was doing that Donnie hits me and tells me that I was snoring, but I told him it wasn’t snoring I was trying to call in a big buck for him. I don’t think he believed me. Well the sun is starting to rise, and the feeder goes off, scared us big time. About 10 minutes later, there is a huge buck and about the same size doe at the feeder. 38 yards, no shooting lane- too far. Well the doe walks away and her boyfriend starts to follow, I stopped him with noise-40 yards. Donnie draws and shoots it over his back he shot for 50 yards. We get out and look for about 10 minutes, to make sure it wasn’t a hit. Get back in the blind, 5 minutes later a small doe is at the feeder, I look but I can’t see the feeder. I keep looking and looking, then something catches my eye and there is a doe standing 20 yards from the blind broadside oblivious to it. Donnie draws, shoots through the netting and I think he hit her but she stops 40 yards away behind a tree so I can’t see if she is bleeding. She stayed by that tree for 10 minutes, and then she walks back toward the blind. I stop her with the same sound as the buck, broadside 30 yards. Donnie draws and I lower the window. I hear his arrow hit some leaves and bounce around. She ran away. Now Donnie is really upset two shots at the same deer and no hit. I try to calm him down but it wasn’t happening. He continues to beat himself up. Then he says, “You have got to be kidding” I look and here comes 3 does about 60 yards away walking toward the feeder. He says fourth times a charm. Someone shoots and the deer decide to go and investigate the shot. We decide we will walk back to the house. SUN P.M We decide to hunt the same stand as Saturday morning. We borrow Flinger’s 223. We set in the stand until just before dark. Donnie spots a deer, I look down the hill but don’t see it. He tells me to hush; I keep looking and finally see her 10-15 yards away. He aims and shoots and misses. I was looking over his shoulder; I am still baffled on how he missed. The only thing I can figure is the arc of the bullet sailed over her back. Well that’s the hunt for us. Thank you Dan and Mr. Samples. Thank you Oleman and Kent for being hunt masters. Thank you Swat and Tammy for cooking the delicious food. Thank you to Gina, Olelady, and Leann for being our support. Thank you Flinger for allowing us to use your gun and being range master. And I want to thank Donnie (my son) for allowing me to join him on his hunt. Nice meeting you Dwight, next time you can have the bed if it will help you not snore. J/K. And it was nice seeing some of the others again. Killer, Brandon. Congratulations to all the hunters for a successful hunt.

Here the story Fri pm I arrived at the Duncan Ranch around 7:00 pm. After saying hi to everybody and grabbing a bite to eat it was off to bed. Sat AM Oleman woke me at 5:00. After getting dressed it was time to wake Jacob. After much shaking he finally arose. With coffee in hand it was off to the stand. While driving in we ran a hog out off the food plot we would be hunting. Oleman gave us a general idea of what we would be looking at and how the deer would come in. Shortly after sunup I saw the first deer it was a a buck. As the morning got brighter I could tell he was a young ten. After a few minutes he disappeared into the brush. Around 7:40 the first group of does came in with a young buck following. This buck had broken off on side so he was not in any danger. Around 8:00 I saw a large body deer working in the brush. I get my binos and take a look. It was a buck and a nice one at that...8pts, approx 16 inch spread and good tines. Jacob and I discussed shooting this buck but decided that he was to young and we thought we would see something better. After a few minutes he leaves and Jacob ask if he can shoot one of the does. I told him to wait until a little later, that a good buck could show up anytime. We still had over an hour of hunting left. Around 9:00 I told Jacob to get ready to shoot a big doe that was within 100 yds. As he was getting ready the doe turned and followed three other does out of the food plot. Strike one for us but still a great hunt. Sat P.M. After a wonderful lunch, a little fishing and bullriding off to the Samples ranch. After being explained what we can and can't shoot off to the stand we go. On the way out I told Jacob that I have never hunted exotics. He looked at me and said " Heck I have never even seen an exotic!!! " So together we would experince a first. Once we pulled up to the stand I knew we were in for a tough hunt. The stand was located in a creek bottom with very limited visabilty. Any animals would be in our lap so to speak as soon as they came out. The stand was also located 30 yards from the feeder and sitting out in the open. Shortly after getting situated we saw movement in the brush. A couple of Axis and a fallow. THey stayed in brush until the feeder went off. After the feeder went off they started coming in. The first two that stepped out were Axis Bucks, includung a big one. After seeing the box stand back into the brush they go. THe third deer was a Axis doe. As soon as she came out she had us pegged. We were in a stare down and Jacob couldn't get into position. She turned and disppeared. We sat until dark and as the sun disappeared we saw a huge fallow buck, a fallow spike and some other kinda animal which neither one of us knew. Again close but no cigar. Strike Two Sun P.M. The morning found us up with anticipation and feeling a little fourth quarter pressure. We meet knet and off to the stand we go. After finding the stand we get settled in. Within minutes we have two does about ten yards from. They watch stand and watch us until the feeder went. As soon as the feeder went off, they ran off snorting and blowing. They did this for about 30 minutes. Jacob asked me if I thought they would be back and I said not likely but there are more deer out there. As soon as the does settled down another blow. The window of the stand blew shut, sounding as if someone beat the stand with a sledge hammer. When this happended Jacob just bowed his head in Disappointment. I really wanted him to get a deer but I told him that hunting was more than killing something. It was about being out enjoying waht mother nature has to offer. He nodded in agreement and said that he really wanted to shoot something. Now I was wishing I would have let him shoot that buck Sat. morning. But hindsight is 20/20. Anyways about this time I see a young doe coming in from I believe the west. Jacob asked if he could shoot and I gave the green light, there was no way I was going to say no. As he is getting ready for the shot we realize he is to short and needs to sit my lap. THe doe is now 50 yds and after a few moments the doe turns broadside. Jacob takes aim and fires. He made a perfect shot and the doe goes 25 yds and piles up. As we celebrate and high five we get settled back down. Jacob wants to go see his "trophy" immediately but I suggested we wait 30 minutes to see what else comes in. Jacob agreeded and after about 3 minutes he asked if we could go see his doe. Now this is where it gets interesting. After we climb out of the stand and start walking torward his doe I se another one coming up from behind us and to our right. I tell Jacob to get back in the stand. So thee we are in race with this doe crawling back to our stand. Once inside we get situated and ready for the shot. When the doe turned side ways Jacob shot and I knew immediatley he gut shot her. I grabbed the rifle from Jacob and reloaded and waited hoped the doe would give me a shot. At about 140 yds , at a walk, I fire a shot and the doe drops in her tracks. We wait few minutes and get out to find Jacob's deer. THe first deer was easy. As we walked to the second deer, the doe threw her head up and acted as though she was fixing to bolt. I shoulder the rifle and fire. Clean miss. I fumble in my pockes for another shell and realize they are in the deer blind. Dang it!! I sent Jacob running back to the deer stand for the bullets. When he returned one shot through the neck finished her off. My first shot actually broke her back and paralized her. After high fives we walk over to see her. WOW What a doe, she isby far one off the largest does that I have evr seen. As we were dragging Jacob looked at me and said with all the seriousness in the world " Brandon, you know... you really aren't that good a shot " That almost floored we, I started laughing....Heck I thought I did pretty good, shot a doe walking at 140 yards with a unfamiliar rifle, did miss her but she was moving then to and I was shooting freehand, then followed it up with a shoot through the neck!!!! What fun. Who would of though went from no feer two to deer down within five minutes. After cleaning back to camp we go. This will always be a hunt I will cherish. Dan & Jen, Mr. Samples....thanks for inviting us down and allowing these kids a wonderful opprotuniy. Oleman, Shirley, Tammy, Donnie thanks for all the hard work. To all the hunters and guides/parents enjoyed sharing camp with ya' Jacob can't wait to hunt with you again.

Great story Brandon. Congrats Jacob on your 2 does, and to Brandon & Jacob it sounds like you two are bonded friends. Thanks Brandon for being Jacob's guide. I would have loved being there, but "the rules" prevented me from doing that.

Dangit, I just did a super long write up to all of y'all for your hardwork and dedication to making this hunt successful, plus that was a great write up Brandon, and an excellent hunt Jacob. Totally a classic, about telling Brandon that he can't shoot for nada, but in a nicer way. You're not the first one to tell him that. Anyways, the write up disappeared on me b/c I hit the wrong button and I wasn't able to retrieve it. Great job gang.

I was privileged to escort my granddaughter Kayla Goodson on the HCB 2003 youth hunt. We had a wonderful time. Our trip started Friday morning Dec. 19, we stopped in the town of Little River @ the Burkette pecan farm, I wanted Kayla to see how pecans were gathered & prepared for market. Mrs. Burkette was very friendly & informative. We bought some pecans for the trip & got back on the road to the Duncan 6D Ranch for the youth hunt. We arrived at the ranch early afternoon. Hunt master Roy Wolff was already there. He & his sweet wife Shirley were busy unloading food into the First class lodge the group was furnished by the Duncan Ranch to stay in. Kayla & I pitched in & after everything was unloaded & everyone arrived, Roy gathered all hunters & their guides together to explain the rules of the hunt. Saturday morning 12-20-2003 First Hunt, Kayla & I were taken to a box stand north of the hunting lodge, the weather was perfect, around 27degrees, clear, we had a young doe come to the feeder, but didn’t take her due to her age. Back at camp, breakfast was waiting, thanks to Donnie & Tammy Rodriguez, Boy what a treat to have meals ready to eat when you come in from each hunt, Thanks Donnie & Tammy. Duncan 6D Ranch owner Dan Duncan invited our entire group to a Jr. bull bucking on another part of his ranch in the middle of the day on Saturday. We were truly entertained at this event. We went straight to the exotic ranch owned by Mr. Samples after the rodeo. Mr. Samples showed all of us what the youth could shoot. We were then taken to our stands. We saw fallow does & bucks, whitetail does & bucks, & orex’s. Kayla had a fallow doe in her sights, but it was standing behind one of the feeder legs, so she did not shoot in fear of making a bad shoot. When we got back to the hunting headquarters, we all thanked Mr. Samples for his hospitality & headed back to the Duncan ranch where another fine meal was waiting for us. This was the end of the second hunt Saturday evening 12-20-2003. Third Hunt Sunday morning 12-21-2003 at the Duncan Ranch, Kayla & I were taken to a different blind overlooking a food plot, The wind had really started to blow out of the south, At this blind the deer normally come out of the woods on the north side of the blind, So I feel this is why we didn’t see any deer, except for five (5) does in a full gallop 244 yds. south of us. The hunt was supposed to be over after the morning hunt, But thanks to the generosity of Mr. Duncan he gave the three youth hunters that didn’t take a deer the option to hunt the Sunday evening hunt, Which all agreed in a heartbeat to accept. Kayla & I went back to the box stand we had hunted that morning. About 30 minutes before dark a doe came out to feed, Kayla got ready to shoot, Just as she pulled the trigger, the deer turned towards us, She missed, But it was a 150 yds. . I told her that it was ok, that their would another time. First of all I would like to thank our host Dan & Jennifer Duncan for a first class hunt. They went out of their way to show us a good time. Then I want to thank our other host Mr. Samples for a good time also. I thought it was very nice of a man like him to give the youth (And some of us guides) a chance to see some of the exotic wildlife in the wild. I also want to thank the HCB staff for a first class, well ran youth hunt, I was truly impressed. Sincerely, Paw Paw Dwight Goodson
