Steve Wolff's (Flinger) Eight-Point
Buck
November 9, 2003

Me , Oleman , Darren and Breck met at a ranch in semi south Texas Thursday about
10:30.
We all got signed in and headed to our pastures to scout and set up
blinds.
They gave Breck his own pasture for some reason but it turned out to be
a bonus for us.
We (me, Oleman and Darren) could not find any buck sign at all in the
whole pasture.
So Darren set his blind in a likely spot and Oleman and I went
and found the best deer sign we could and
set his blind up. I didn't have a spot
yet so I set in the truck in a cross road and watched the road that
Oleman and
Darren where set up on. The roads where long enough that 2 hunters could hunt
the
same road. I'm there watching, here comes the feed truck and then its gone.
After a while I see deer
right on top of the Oleman. One buck and a bunch of
does, he's on them. Oh and pigs, he had some good
hogs also.
Down Darren's road
he just has javi's.
LOL
The next morning I go set up on the back of our pasture
in the truck trying to find a buck to set up on.
Didn't see a deer. I get out
about 8:30 and sneak down another road and a buck runs across
about 100 yards. I
keep going and see some does. After the hunt is over for the morning
I go set up
a T2 in the area. Hunt it that afternoon, nothing but does. Get back to camp and Breck
says he hates his tent and offers it to me. Cool . Hell yea I tell him so
the Saturday afternoon I'm in his
blind and had an 8 and 10 and a 7 point come in . No
shots. Had the seven dead 20 times over but
didn't want him. That night he ask me
again to hunt there. I told him that I was going to get him to
offer it to Oleman. Oleman declines!! He asks Darren and he does the same. Flinger, you want
it?
Hell yeah!! Off we go. Before I get out I tell Breck to corn the hell out of
it.
The lesser deer cleaned it up the night before and the better ones didn't
stay around long enough.
He hammers the tailgate feeder and I can still hear his
truck and hear corn crunching.
Dang, already!! Can't see its dark. .......
After I
can see I see that there is a big 8 and a real nice 10. The same 10 Breck got on
the trail cam 135" or so.
They feed around and I let them calm down. The 8 comes
in first, 10 yards.
Let him feed past. Then the 10 feeds in the same as the 8.
Broad side 10 yards.
He hears me drawing and scoots out up the road. I took my
eyes off him long enough to make
sure I got the bow pointed without hitting the
blind, it was real tight in there.
Anchor, see the buck . Ranging in my head
32, 35, pin on Smack!! Could not tell where I hit him.
Told myself wait till my
ride comes. Well 20 minutes after the shot I hear yotes
going nuts at about 50
yards. I here them fighting and just going nuts.
I say to myself MY DEER! ZIP!
Off to the races straight towards them.
I hit a pocket and 15 or so yotes
scatter!! There's my buck and they where tearing him to shreds.
I lost both hind
quarters and the mid section. I set there in the middle of the middle
(as Breck
says) keeping the dogs off my buck.
Thing is I had the 8 standing where the 10
was when I looked away .
So the 10 got lucky and I did as well. When I kill a
deer at a day lease its always
been the last hunt, why change now?
Thanks for
getting tired of that blind Breck and offering it to me!!
